The shorter days of fall are lit up by brilliant yellow and red leaves on the trees in Drake Park. Solitude is easy to come by, and layering is highly recommended as cool shadows may cast a chill. Sip a Bend ale in the warmth of a fire pit while the sunset creates a backdrop behind the Cascades.

Understand the elements in Bend!
Did someone say 300 days of sunshine? Yep, we say it all the time. On average, Bend gets more sunny days than almost anywhere else in Oregon. Averaging over 160 bluebird days each year, summertime in Bend is a nearly endless season of blue skies. Winter also offers a plethora of sunshine for basking, so grab your gear and sunscreen and enjoy some year-round rays.
Windy days are frequently on tap. With the Cascade Mountains to the west and high desert to the east, Bend can get a tad windy. On average, October through April tends to be the windiest months, with December having the highest winds. In the winter make sure to bundle up, check conditions in the mountains, and let your winter spirits soar. During the summer months, the wind tends to be friendlier, so enjoy your day floating on the Deschutes or paddling on an alpine lake and savor the smooth summer breeze.
A rainy day in Bend is better than a sunny day at the office. We love precipitation in Bend! It can mean hero dirt on our MTB trails, more water in our rivers, and an average of more than 38 feet of snow at Mt. Bachelor. Precipitation is most common October through April. November tends to be the rainiest month, and December through February tend to be the snowiest months. Although winters are getting harder to predict, you can almost always count on snowy conditions in the mountains for skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing.

Ever-changing Weather

One thing that’s constant in Central Oregon is the changing weather. Each season presents its weather, adventures, and sometimes obstacles. There’s a season for everyone to explore and enjoy! But be sure to check conditions, be prepared, and call ahead for expert local intel so you can have fun, stay safe, and make the most of your time in Bend.

Mud season is generally during spring and fall when our weather changes the most. Rain, wind, freeze, and thaw on the trails can make for a muddy shoulder season. Don’t let this discourage you, though, because there’s so much to do around town. The High Desert Museum is perfect for family fun. Or take a hike in the Oregon Badlands.
When the heat turns up and the sun shines all day, then there’s nothing better than playing on the water. Summertime in Bend is a paradise with warm temperatures, endless bluebird skies, mountain peaks to hike, trails to ride, and being on the water! Bend’s water season means sunrise paddles on Mirror Pond, a splash and giggle float on the Deschutes, or maybe a guided canoe trip with your family.
The Central Oregon fire season can start as early as July and may go into October. Because of forest fires happening in areas surrounding Bend, we can get our fair share of smoke. It’s challenging to predict, but make sure you check ahead, ask about cancellation policies for activities and lodging, and be safe! If the smoke socks in while visiting, be kind to your lungs and stay indoors as much as possible. The good news is there’s still tons of indoor fun to be had in Bend.
Cross-country skiing through snow-covered forests, fresh tracks at Mt. Bachelor, a local ale by the fire — this is a typical winter day in Bend. While snowfall in town tends to be low, just a short drive away your winter wonderland awaits. Wintertime in Bend is cozy, playful, and delightful.
