10 ways to savor your extra Daylight Savings hour in Bend

Deschutes River Trail

It’s that time again. Time to fall back for Daylight Savings 2018.

Astro Cucumber Lavender Mojo

Blogger Tawna with the cucumber lavender mojo at Astro Lounge.

Here in Bend, we’ll switch our clocks just after midnight on November 3, which means we all gain an extra hour. What’s the best way to spend it?

Grab a Bend happy hour

Countless bars and breweries around Bend offer killer happy hours, with cheap eats and drinks a’plenty.

My personal faves include Astro Lounge (hooray for cucumber-lavender mojos and sweet potato fries), Anthony’s in the Old Mill District (wine flights and to-die-for ahi nachos), and Bend Brewing Company (love their sriracha cauliflower and Elk Lake IPA).

Squeeze in a short hike

Falling back means we gain a bit more daylight first thing in the morning, so why not use it for a short hike?

Shevlin Park is not only a pretty place to spot fall colors right now, but a nice place to burn that extra hour.

Some of Bend’s loveliest in-town hikes include Pilot Butte State Park, Shevlin Park, Sawyer Park, or a trek along the Bend River Trail starting at Meadow Camp. Most of these can be done in sixty minutes or less, so it’s the perfect use of the hour you’ve just gained.

Get a 60-minute spa treatment

Want to make your Bend vacation ultra-relaxing? Enjoy that extra hour to the fullest with a 60-minute spa treatment like a facial or a massage.

A one-hour massage is the perfect use for those extra sixty minutes.

There are plenty of bliss-inducing day spas to choose from in Bend, and you can even find specialty services like couples’ massage at Jinsei Spa or the ultimate “green” spa experience (complete with organic products) at Anjou Spa.

Leave Bend better than you found it

Feeling the urge to leave Bend a bit better than you found it? Check our Visit Like a Local page for ideas! It can be as simple as toting a trash bag to pick up litter along your favorite park trail, or remembering that reusable water bottle instead of chucking disposable ones in the landfill.

Got a few minutes left over? Take The Bend Pledge to fully commit yourself to sustainable vacationing (and maybe win a Bend trip while you’re at it!)

Use your lunch hour wisely

Ahh…lunch hour. It’s one of my favorite hours of the day, and having those extra sixty minutes in your day gives you an excuse to linger longer.

Toomies lunch

Nothing beats a Toomie’s lunch special!

Grab some tasty tacos at El Sancho (and check out this blog post for more ideas on where to find Bend’s best fish tacos). Scoop up some tasty Thai cuisine at Toomies, which boasts a discounted lunch special every day.

Stroll along the river in the Old Mill District until your growling belly drives you indoors to Café Yumm for a tasty Edamame Bowl, or maybe over to Pastini Pastaria for a scrumptious plate of pasta.

Pedal power hour

Want to burn your extra hour making sure your quads are burning, too? Book an hour of bike time in Bike Town USA!

Renting a pedal-powered or electric bike is a great way to enjoy your extra hour.

You’ll find Zagster rental stations scattered around town, so download the app, hop on a bike, and start pedaling.

Want to take it a bit easier? A rental from Bend Electric Bikes gives you the option to add some electric oomph to your pedal power. You can even book a tour if you want someone else to lead the way.

Take a self-guided art walk

Bend is teeming with public art, and it only takes an hour to see a good chunk of one of the city’s coolest collections.

The Tin Pan Alley Art Collection is an assortment of large-scale paintings, collages, and photos displayed on the side of buildings, parking garages, and alleyways.

Tin Pan Alley Art Collection

Enjoying the artwork in the Tin Pan Alley art collection is as simple as walking down the street.

Begin by studying the Tin Pan Alley Art Collection lineup online so you have a sense of where you want to start. Kick off your tour by grabbing a tasty beverage at Thump Coffee or Bellatazza to enjoy while you meander.

And if you stop to browse the downtown boutiques and you end up spending more than an hour, I promise no one will mind.

An hour of arcade games

Got a soft spot for vintage arcade games? One hour of unlimited game play at Vector Volcano is only $5, which will get you all the Donkey Kong, Asteroids, and Mortal Kombat you can handle. They even serve craft beer, so you can sip some suds while you get your game on.

Bend Ale Trail Trophy

This baby could be yours.

Hit some Bend Ale Trail stops

Since November is Bend Ale Trail Month, odds are good you’ve got at least a couple brewery stops on your Bend agenda. We all want that trophy, after all.

An hour isn’t enough to hit all 18, but it’s a good chance to hit one or two extras that might be on your list. It only takes 10 to get the commemorative Silipint and the trophy in November, but hit all 18 and you’ll also get a bottle opener (plus bragging rights, of course). For more info, go here.

Soak or float

Float Central Bend

You’ll have to budget 90 minutes for your session at Float Central, but it’s sooooo worth it!

An hour is just enough time for a relaxing soak in the turquoise-tiled saltwater pool at McMenamins Old Saint Francis (it’s worth noting the pool is closed through Nov. 19 for routine maintenance, so make sure to plan your visit after that).

You can also enjoy the ultimate buoyant experience by floating your cares away at Float Central. Sessions are 90 minutes, but you can definitely spare the extra half hour to enjoy the blissful, weightless feeling you’ll experience while suspended in warm water losing all sense of time, space, and gravity.
