All week long, I’ve been asking male friends & colleagues  how they plan to spend Father’s Day in Bend.

For the record, guys, I wasn’t trying to invite myself.

I’m surprised by the diversity of responses I got. While some dudes want to spend every waking hour with their offspring, others love the excuse to have some “me time” for a round of golf, a nap in the hammock, or a bike ride.

No matter which camp you fall into, there are plenty of fun ways to celebrate dad’s big day in Bend. Here are six ideas:

Get teed off

If golf’s your game, you’re in luck if you plan to spend Father’s Day in Bend. There are more than 25 courses around Central Oregon, including four of the top 200 golf courses (according to Golf Digest magazine). Sun Mountain Fun Center offers mini golf that’s fun for the whole family!

Hook, line, and sinker

Dads who love fishing will find plenty of spots to cast a line around Bend (which was named one of the nation’s top 10 fly fishing towns by Fly Fisherman magazine). Whether dad is an expert or not entirely sure which end of the pole to hold, he’ll have a blast on an afternoon trip with a local fishing outfitter. Most offer gift certificates you can tuck into a Father’s Day card. For dads looking to head out on their own, the Deschutes River offers 252 miles of fishable waters, or you can drive along the Cascade Lakes Highway for a different sort of experience. Crane Prairie Reservoir, South Twin Lake, Little Lava Lake, Big Lava Lake, and Wickiup Reservoir are all teeming with fish and great views, plus they offer places for kids to splash and play. For a chance at a million bucks, head to South Twin Lake where Cabela’s planted a specially-tagged fish. If you catch it, you could win a million bucks through their Fish for Millions promotion. Now there’s a Father’s Day gift to remember! Prefer something a little more low-key? Try out the free 12-hole casting course in the Old Mill District, or visit the small catch and release pond at Pine Nursery Park. The good folks at Oregon Department and Fish and Game keep the pond stocked so kids can test their skills. I’m not much of an angler myself, but I still enjoy accompanying my gentleman friend and his offspring so I can sit on a blanket in the grass with snacks, a good book, and an occasional stroll to the adjacent off-leash dog park.

Run for a good cause

The runners in your family might enjoy Dash for Dad, a 10K run to benefit prostate cancer research and support. The run starts at Pine Nursery Park, goes through and around the park and along the canal system. There are great mountain views and you can enjoy the peaceful sound of moving water along the canals. The run kicks off at 9 a.m. Sunday and registration fees range from $35 to $50 (depending on signup date and which race you do). You can register here or at the event site the morning of the race.

Make sure dad is well-fed

Every single guy I asked about Father’s Day mentioned food in one form or another. Our Director of Sales & Sports Development, Kevney Dugan, is looking forward to Father’s Day brunch at Chow, followed by a trail run with his one-year-old daughter in her chariot. After that, he and his lovely family will cycle around town for lunch at a local brewery, followed by a nap on the porch and a barbecue with Hawaiian chicken kebabs from Newport Market and some local brew from 10 Barrel. That sounds like an excellent sampling of Bend’s best fare! In our household, my gentleman friend is still deciding between his traditional brunch at Original Pancake House. If weather allows, we’re heading out for a river float after that, followed by a late lunch at Crux Fermentation Project. I’m liking Kevney’s idea of a barbecue dad doesn’t have to prepare, so we’ll likely get our fill of delicious ribs at Baldy’s Barbecue. They’ve got locations on Bend’s east side, west side, and in Redmond, and fried okra that’ll make you swoon.

Pitch a tent for the weekend

It’s looking like the weather will be nice, so this could be a good weekend to venture out with your tent and a cooler for some outdoorsy bonding with the whole family. Check out this list of campgrounds to pick your spot, and don’t forget to bring extra layers. The nights still get pretty chilly this time of year.

Brews and Bands at BTBS (say that five times fast!)

If you’ve got a dad who digs live music and beer, head to Broken Top Bottle Shop at 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday evening. The Saturday show features Corvallis-based Brutal Bridges, while Sunday offers music from Mai. Grab a pint from their amazing tap list or pick from the cooler of more than 300 bottles and cans. Don’t forget to grab an order of their to-die-for nachos to share with dad.
