Scouting for Bend's best happy hours

Maybe I’m cheap. Maybe I’m old enough that I’ve now joined the ranks of the early eaters.

Whatever the reason, I’m a sucker for a good happy hour. Fortunately, Bend has a veritable cornucopia of fabulous ones to choose from.

The happy hour menu at 900 Wall is one of my favorites. My husband and I can order a Caesar salad ($4), a pepperoni pizza ($6) and the beef carpaccio ($9) and have plenty to eat for the both of us. 900 Wall makes the best Greyhounds in town, with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and vodka for just $4. Their happy hour goes from 3-6 p.m. daily.

Another favorite downtown happy hour is the one at Astro Lounge. The ambiance here is a bit cozier here than at 900 Wall, and their happy hour menu includes a number of hearty options like sandwiches and burgers. My favorite is the chicken, bacon, swiss sandwich with basil mayo and fries for $6. Their antipasto plate is a steal at just $4, and their rotating selection of happy hour cocktails and wines for $4-$5 is great chance to try something new. Happy hour here goes from 5-7 and 10-closing seven days a week.

Venturing out of downtown toward the Old Mill District, Anthony’s Restaurant has another amazing happy hour. Nab a table with a view of the river, and order a plate of their scrumptious Ahi Nachos made with sashimi-grade ahi tuna, wasabi & pineapple chutney served on taro chips for $5. For just $1 you can get a shot glass oyster shooter or shrimp cocktail, and their $5 wine flights are a perfect way to sample a few different wines that pair well with seafood. Happy hour here is from 3-6 daily.

Just a block downriver is another great spot right on the Deschutes, Greg’s Grill. Aside from gorgeous architecture inside and out, the added bonus here is that their bar menu is available whenever you’re dining outside or in the bar. My favorite treat is the Prime Rib Quesadilla for just $5.95. The generous order of sweet potato fries is a filling option for $5.95, and their wine and beer menu has dozens of great selections. Happy hour/bar menu pricing is available from 3-closing daily.
