New program showcases local artists, and Bend's unique arts & culture scene.

Pillars Of Art Program Kicks Off At New Bend Visitor Center

(BEND, OR)— Less than a month after moving into its new space on the corner of Lava and Oregon in downtown Bend, the new Bend Visitor Center is already covered in graffiti.

Believe it or not, that’s cause for celebration.

Visit Bend kicked off the new program to introduce tourists to Bend’s unique arts and culture scene and to support emerging local artists.

Through the Pillars of Art program, Visit Bend will select one local artist every three months to create unique artwork on the cement pillars in the lobby of the new Bend Visitor Center. In addition to the chalk art featured on the pillars, the artist will also have framed art displayed in the Visitor Center during the three-month period.

“The Pillars of Art program offers a unique way for local artists to have their work seen by literally thousands of tourists stopping by the Bend Visitor Center,” explained Doug La Placa, Visit Bend CEO. “Not only will this make our lobby more vibrant and entertaining, but it’s a great way to support emerging artists and promote Bend’s incredible art scene.”

The first artist selected for the program has already begun work on her installment. Megan McGuinness, 21, was chosen to kick off the program based on her flair for whimsical images with bright colors, bold lines, and an edgy vibe.“I’m excited to be a part of this program,” she said. “There are so many people coming through here who have never seen Bend, but fall in love with its natural beauty and unique culture. The Pillars of Art program is a great way to bring those worlds together.”

Visit Bend will promote the new program through social media channels and through the First Friday Art Walk. Artists interested in having their work considered for future installments should contact Visit Bend at 541-382-8048. Those interested in seeing the artwork are encouraged to stop by the Bend Visitor Center between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
