The Deschutes River Trail from Meadow Day Use Area to Benham Falls East follows along the Deschutes River south of Bend is a stunning natural area to hike, trail run, and mountain bike. Located just 7 miles south of Bend starting at the Meadow Day Use Area you’ll find several access points and parking areas. Lava Island, Big Eddy, Aspen, Dillon Falls, Slough, Benham Falls West and Benham Falls East all have parking areas and access points to the Deschutes River Trail.
This is a multi-use trail system in many places with hikers, dogs, runners, and mountain bikers so bring your best self, use trail etiquette, and don’t forget a Northwest Forest Pass, which is required year round. Dogs are required to be leashed from May 15 to September 15. There are certain sections that are designated to foot traffic only, so mountain bikers follow the signs and stay on your own designated trails.
This relatively flat scenic trail gives you a taste of the local geology, plant life, wildlife, and the outdoor recreation that we love so much in Central Oregon. When temps start to warm up and the ground starts to dry, this trail becomes extremely popular. Because The Deschutes River Trail is close to town, friendly to all ages and most abilities, in the summer it’s a haven for locals and tourists alike to get outside and play.
In the winter time depending on snow levels it can still be hikeable and a great place to take your dog. If the trail’s packed with snow then take advantage of some picturesque nordic skiing, fat biking, or snowshoeing. Because the Deschutes River Trail is at a higher elevation than Bend, check conditions first and be prepared for snowy, muddy, and icy conditions, even if town is snow-free.
